Taking time to think does not tell a partner what you are thinking about. This INTP compatibility example uses a possible move to show how to make interest and uncertainty visible before either person assumes a decision has been made.
A question that needs more than an immediate answer
Illustrative scene: Your partner asks whether you would like to move to another city together. You start considering rent, work, friendships, and what each of you would give up. You say very little for a minute, then ask about the budget. They had hoped first to hear whether the idea of a shared future appealed to you, and your silence has left them unsure.
Name what is happening during the pause
You might say, “I am interested, and I am trying to think it through. My questions are about how we could do it.” If you are undecided, say that instead. A clear statement of what you do know stops the other person from having to infer everything from your questions.
Separate the first conversation from the decision. Tonight you could discuss what attracts each of you to moving; at the weekend, compare costs and practical constraints. That gives exploration a place without leaving the emotional question unanswered for days.
Say what you know, what you are still considering, and when you can return to the decision.
