INFJ and ENFP Compatibility: Making Room to Talk

Staying with one thought while leaving room for new ones.

Are INFJ and ENFP compatible?

An INFJ and an ENFP can be friends or partners, but the type labels do not tell you whether two people will suit each other. The Myers & Briggs Foundation does not identify any type combination as more successful.

These codes share N and F and differ on I/E and J/P. That comparison is not a compatibility percentage. The example below asks a more concrete question: can each person finish a thought while leaving room for the other's ideas?

A conversation after an exhibition

Illustrative scene: Two friends leave an exhibition with different things they want to say. The friend identifying with INFJ wants to unpack the final artwork and why it stayed with them. The friend identifying with ENFP moves between several pieces, a childhood memory, and an idea for a future trip. Both are engaged, but the first feels interrupted and the second begins to feel corrected.

Ask for a little time with the thought you want to finish

Try: “I want to come back to your trip idea. Can I stay with this piece for a minute first?” This is easier to answer than “You never go deep.” The other person could respond, “Yes. I am making connections as I talk; I am interested in what you noticed.”

You can take turns without timing the whole conversation. Finish one thought, then invite the connection that was waiting. If either person loses the thread, say so plainly. Writing down a new idea can also help someone keep it without immediately changing the subject.

The useful question is whether both people get to develop what matters to them. Neither a long, focused conversation nor a lively series of associations is evidence of caring more. The scene illustrates two possible rhythms; real friends may use both, and may want something different on another day.

Compare INFJ and ENFP preferences to see where the two codes match and differ. Use the comparison to start a conversation about what fits each of you.
